Have you ever been to Memphis? If you have, you know that there are sure to be two things on almost every restaurant menu: BBQ of some sort and Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwiches, because that kind of sandwich was Elvis’s favorite.
I went to Memphis with my parents a few years back, and then went to Ole Miss (where I met Cory) and sure enough, a little over a year later, I was going back to visit Cory in Memphis. Even though I’ve been there many times, I’ve still never had a Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwich from a restaurant. I’ve made them before, but I’ve never had anyone cook one for me.
Speaking of Memphis, who has been to Graceland? I’m kind of a secretly obsessed Elvis fan after taking a History of Rock and Roll class last year. I went to Graceland with my parents and it was awesome. So much history on a single property, it’s insane! My friend Shea wrote a post about my next Elvis destination, Graceland Too (And no, “Too” Is not a typo). Cory is planning on taking me there for my birthday and I cannot wait! Maybe I’ll make a Boozie Elvis Smoothie (after I’m 21 of course) to celebrate!
Check out me and my Dad at Graceland. I totally forgot these pictures existed (except for the souvenir magnet of all of us in front of the Graceland sign that hangs on my fridge!)
So here we are, 3 years after my first trip to Memphis and I’m turning Elvis’s favorite sandwich into a smoothie!
PEANUT BUTTER-BANANA SMOOTHIE
1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
2 frozen bananas
1 heaping Tablespoon peanut butter
1/4 cup rolled oats
1/2 Tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
1 Tablespoon flax seeds
Blend all ingredients in a single serve blender or a food processor until all banana chunks are gone and a thick puree forms.
Pour into a tall drinking glass and enjoy!
I’m all about a good smoothie after a workout. They’re cold and refreshing and just what I need to keep my energy up! This smoothie is very thick (I ate it with a spoon!) and packed with banana flavor plus the sweet flavor of peanut butter. The chocolate flavor is subtle, but still recognizable. Finally, the oats and flax seeds add a great texture that makes this smoothie worthy of the King!
I think Elvis would be pretty pleased with this smoothie. I mean let’s be honest, I am The King of Smoothies…or the queen.
I can’t talk about Elvis without showing you this amazing video.
Buddy Holly was in there! Did ya see that?! Doesn’t Elvis look like a different species in that video? He looks so dark and mysterious, unlike anything I’ve ever seen from that time period.
Anyway, the Million Dollar Quartet has a special place in my heart. Jerry Lee Lewis even lived in Cory’s hometown for a while! I questioned Cory about this extensively. Johnny Cash..I mean what else can you say about him? I cry just thinking about the Nine Inch Nails video he did. And Carl Perkins…well let’s just say I’ve been looking for some Blue Suede Shoes for a while.
Add a little Buddy Holly and I can’t even stand up straight anymore. Let’s just say I get a little Misty Eyed when I talk about him.
Who’s your favorite Elvis?
Mine is definitely the Sun Studios Elvis. I mean what a hunka hunka burnin’ love.
